GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

The imagination retains a passion for freedom.

— John O'Donohue

Welcome, Inspired Seekers!

My most recent newspaper column (posted on my website) began to explore the role of the Spiritual Artist. It is an idea that lights up both my heart and my mind and one that unfolds slowly. As such, I continue this exploration with you during a time when the world needs more artistry. And, if I may say, a deeper sense of the spiritual.

Artistry requires us to use the most powerful gift of childhood – the imagination – a gift that is often set aside with entry into the “real world” of adulthood. Pity. For imagination is not about rules, getting it right or being perfect. It is, in its essence, about the freedom and fun of discovering and loving the brighter view, the creation. Spirituality moves beyond rules, beyond getting it right and into the deeper realm of the imagination.

Depending on your faith path, you view the spiritual with a variety of images (hence, the “imagination”). Christians, Muslims, Taoists, Native Americans and the Celts all see the Divine in different shapes, sizes and shadows. As it should be, for however we view the Holy One, he/she is only seen in our fertile imagination, the core of our being, our deepest level of consciousness. We connect at the heart level.

The spiritual artist works in many mediums and, with varied and broad brush strokes and flowing cuts, always creating and self-assessing. The spiritual artist challenges us to see the world in new images, to release the ties that constrict us, and to free the assimilation of the possible.

When we feel the pull, see new images, taste the flavor of soul freedom, the artist within comes alive and thrives. The sounds of the soul engage us on a cellular level.

Let us loose the spiritual artist within, be willing to bring her to life in a world that desperately needs the inspirational hand of the Divine artist!

Grace, Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
