GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#53 — September 1, 2016

Imperfections are not inadequacies;
they remind us that we are all in this together.

— Brené Brown

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

Can we make peace with imperfection? As one whose business — InspirationInProgress — focuses on service excellence and leadership development, I wrestle with imperfection every day. In the grocery store, in the car, conducting business of most kinds today, presents us with moments of imperfection at every turn. Not easy!

And yet, I am trying to see imperfection as a gateway to mercy, forgiveness and patience; and I am in need of more of all of them. How about you?

The imperfections and failures to fulfill our expectations greet us each day. The inconsistencies of life greet us at every turn. It’s part of our human experience and, honestly, well, I am in amazement at those not ruffled by the twists and turns of unsatisfactory behaviors and outcomes. The ability to accept them and love people through them seems to be a qualification for Sainthood!

Henri Nouwen often refers to the “wounded healer.” I believe this is the ability to love, to heal, to embrace the wounded, the hurting and the imperfect because we admit our own wounds and our own imperfections. This is where we become TheSpaceForGrace — to allow it to enter and to fill and to change us. To give us the mercy, forgiveness and patience we need in a broken and hurting world. It makes us whole.

And so, while I struggle not to complain or criticize, I still seek the moments of grace — and I hope you do as well. They make us whole and they keep us strong in moments of imperfect weakness!

Grace-Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
