Greetings, Inspired Seekers:

The beginning of a new year is upon us and, as I was pondering this year and what it might bring, I thought of a book I read some time ago: “The Year of Magical Thinking” by Joan Didion. It was an excellent read. But, I am wondering, could we riff on the title and allow 2016 to be “The Year of Mystical Thinking?” And, if we could, how might that shape our lives?

If we could mindfully enter into that mystical place where we are in oneness with The Divine and each other, might we be able to bring about a better life for everyone? It is a big question, I know, but this is the time of year for big questions! And big dreams. And they go hand in hand … like we all could.

James Finley wrote: “Thomas Merton realized that people of different religions were not other than me, and how I treat them I’m treating myself.”

How powerful is that thought? How powerfully might that thought change ourselves and our world, if we could really take it in? Like many of you, I am weary of a world that, in the media, is framed by opposing forces, differences and pain. Might not some of that pain be relieved if we could see ourselves in the different and holy light of mysticism? I would like to believe that it could.

And so, as we celebrate the beginning of this new year, as we set our intentions and offer our prayers, as we sit in meditation or walk in silent hope, may our paths intersect. And may we walk with each other and with the Spirit that leads and guides us, understanding that we are all walking each other to the same end. The same home. And, if we shower others with grace, it will also fall upon us.

Yes, the Year of Mystical Thinking … seems like a worthwhile thought for 2016!
