GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#43 — November 1, 2015

We don’t think ourselves into a new way of living;
we live ourselves into a new way of thinking.

— Richard Rohr

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

It’s that time of year again when we gather around tables and offer thanks for all that we have received - and some of what we have not received. The problem, as I see it, is that most of us do this with honest intention far too seldom. Do we really need a holiday to give thanks? As the above quotation intimates: can we live ourselves into a more thankful way of thinking? A way that frames each day and each thought?

In the last few months we have focused on our practice rather than our beliefs. Part of that practice requires us to integrate our head with our heart so that our hands can get busy and do the work of daily life. However, as long as we live by our minds and beliefs and let our thoughts drive us, I am not sure we can live with gratitude, each day. That requires practice. And a kind of expanded spiritual living. Not thinking.

All of the major traditions place a high value on giving thanks:

“Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving” we hear in the Psalms of the Old Testament.
From Ephesians: “I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.”
“Because to give thanks for blessings is itself a blessing, one can never cease to give thanks” are words from Islam.
And from The Buddha: “You have no cause for anything but gratitude and joy.”

I hope you will accept my challenge: to live into each day this month with a deep and abiding sense of gratitude for all the blessings and challenges of this life. For if we live this, authentically, will it not change the way we live and think? And might that just be able to bring about some change in the wider world?

Grace and Thanks to all of you! Celebrate this season and live it into the new year and beyond!

Grace-Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
