GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#41 — September 1, 2015

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

— Matthew 6:34

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

September brings with it an energy for new beginnings; perhaps because no matter how old we are, that “beginning of school” energy remains with us. As my words find their way to your inbox and, I hope, into your heart, I am on retreat. A Mindfulness retreat.

Mindfulness has made its presence known in mainstream society; I am even teaching mindfulness in my corporate training classes. What is it about this ancient practice that has such a pull on our psyches today? Yes, mindfulness has been a part of spirituality — and a full life — for generations:

The Buddha wrote, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” And The Tao proclaims, “stillness, the ruler of movement.” These quotes, in addition to the one from The Book of Matthew, are all guiding us on a path toward wholeness. Fullness.

It is not easy to stay in the moment. It is not easy to be with a friend on the phone without washing the dishes or dressing a child or glancing at a computer screen. Yes, I am guilty. It requires work. And discipline. And, well, practice.

That is why I find the question, “What is your practice?” so much more meaningful than simply asking, “What do you believe?” We believe many things, but we resist the practice.

And so, I am probably on a cushion or chanting or praying or mindfully walking or sharing a meal in silence with others as you read this. But, hopefully, my words will reach your inbox and your heart. And for a few moments we will be together. Fully present. And sharing a new energy.

Grace-Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
