GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#36 — April 1, 2015

Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;

— Isaiah 58:8

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

My mouth is healing — which is a good thing for someone who speaks for a living! The stitches from my recent periodontal surgery are finally out and, while I cannot see what is going on in my mouth (nor do I want to!), I have faith that I am healing.

The flowers in my garden are being restored to life. I know this in spite of the fact that just last week, here in the Northeast, we had snow. Again. I cannot see what is going on beneath the earth (which is not as scary as what I might see in my mouth!) but I have faith that sprigs of green and yellow and purple will begin to appear.

That’s the way it is with healing. It needs the dark, the fallow, the emptiness in order for new life to take hold. And, I am coming to understand, that is also the way it is with faith. The holy words written into many belief systems recognize that.

The Book of Matthew proclaims: The people sitting in darkness saw a great light.
From the Tao: The path into the light seems dark.
The Buddha wrote: Following the Noble Path is like entering a dark room with a light in the hand; the darkness will all be cleared away and the room will be filled with light.

My thought here is that few of us enjoy the time we spend in darkness and those dark nights of the soul can seem achingly long and lonely. And painful. But they are necessary. Growth requires darkness; healing requires darkness; those are the times when Spirit speaks to us — even if we are not yet ready to hear. But listen we must. Because that listening is where grace flows.

Grace and mercy are always there — even when we are not able to receive them. Be patient. Your Creator understands. And that Spirit will wait in the darkness, ready to heal and to take out all the stitches so that we can continue to become whole. And I have faith in that. And I hope you do as well.

Grace-Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
