GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection
#33 — January 1, 2015 |
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. — Isaiah 43:18-19 Greetings, Inspired Seekers! Happy New Year and happy new beginnings! What do you have in mind for 2015? Or, perhaps a better way of putting it is: What are you mindful of as you approach another year of living a full and whole life in this sacred space? I am not talking about resolutions. Sorry, not a fan. While making plans is a part of life, living fully in the moment, mindfully and without attachment to the past, is the message sent by all spiritual teachers. Isaiah, in the quote above, sends this message in the Old Testament. “If you let go a little you will have a little happiness. If you let go a lot you will have a lot of happiness. If you let go completely you will be free” is one of the teachings from Buddhism. And the Hindu teachings inform us that “If one clings to his attachments, refusing to let go, sorrows will not let go their grip on him.” So, what gives? Obviously not us - otherwise why would our spiritual teachers be so intent on helping us understand this? It seems to me that holding on to the past - resentments, fears, pains, the unforgiven, and even our previous successes, all block what is to come for us. They also block what is right in front of us - in the present moment. What is to be enjoyed? What is needed? What stands to be given? What love could be received or shared? What are all the “nows” that we miss because we are stuck in the “thens?” And so, my beloved friends, as we move into the coming year, let us walk together unfettered by the ties that bind us to the past and prevent us from realizing the possibilities that are presented to us! Let go and let gifts abound for you and those you love - and for those who are about to grace your path! Namaste! Blessings! Shalom! Monthly Affirmation: Today I understand that my beginning springs forth from my endings. I let go to let gifts flow!
