GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection
#20 — December 1, 2013 |
We are such stuff as dreams are made of … — William Shakespeare Greetings, Inspired Seekers: Of what do you seek at this time of year? Of what do you dream? Those are pretty big questions, all things considered. Yes, I am sure that we would all like to think we are searching for world peace or dreaming of nourishment for a hungry world. But, I think that we are really seeking that which is much smaller. And that, in my book, is O.K. For it is often in the smallness of things that much is found. In the book of James we read: “Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.” In the Tao Te Ching, it is written: “It is small, as It nurture all things…” And from Rumi come these words: “You have become my greater self; how can smallness limit me?” Great spiritual leaders from all traditions recognize that it is in the smallest and most simple of actions that greatness springs. And we realize, as they did, that we are a small part of this very large world. So, as we approach the end of the year and take stock of this last year of life that we have lived, let us look for the small. Let us remember those deeds of kindness that we have extended to others and that we have received. For in the tiniest of packages come great gifts. And how sad would it be if we missed them.
