GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection
#153 — January 1, 2025 |
Mysticism occurs whenever a human being sees the separation between the natural and the supernatural, between the temporal and the eternal, as overcome. — Albert Schweitzer Greetings, Inspired Seekers! Who doesn't love a good mystery? During Covid, a gang of my best girls introduced me to author Louise Penny – if you haven't read her, give her a try. I'm betting that you will become hooked and obsessed with her, just as I have! But, what about the mystery of every day? What about the mysticism that all of our traditions enter into bravely, with wonder, and, in doing so, find the venture to be … well … mysterious? It seems a great way to begin a New Year – committing to the exploration of the mystical experience in every day of life! We do not need ritual, pro forma exercises, doctrine or dogma, we simply need to release our hearts and minds to the Divine, in all of its holy confusion. We will be drawn in as we open up. Mysticism is defined by most as a direct experience with the Sacred – the Supreme Being of our faith – however we define that belief. Sometimes we experience a new level of unity and communion, a greater sense of interbeing, sacredness or peace. The experience is often intuitive and has our logical brain scrambling for an explanation that is difficult to put into words. The ordinary, everyday mysteries invite us into a deeper relationship with each other, the wider world and our Creator. The invitation can come as an epiphany, a wild awakening or a quiet moment of inspiration in the center of a busy day. Like a good party, mysticism offers an unexpected invitation. Perhaps 2025 will be a time of awakening to the mysticism of the ordinary. Perhaps that awakening will ripple throughout the world. Perhaps it is that mystery that will save us. Let's bring in the New Year with the promise of hope, grounded in faith and fueled by the mystery of blessings! Happy New Year and may goodness, through the unexpected, follow you in all your days. Grace, Always Yours, Question of the Month: Will you be open to the mysticism of your faith this coming year? The Reverend Dr. Deborah Darlington explores the role of mysticism in many of the world's traditions and supports people of all beliefs in their spiritual journeys.
