GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#142 — February 1, 2024

Live the actual moment. Only this actual moment is life.

— Thich Nhat Hanh

Greetings, Inspired Seekers:

How many times have we heard or even used the phrase, “It is what it is?” Probably quite a bit and I have to admit that, of late, I cringe when I hear it. What evokes this response in me to a phrase that, is now, such an everyday retort to every day questions? Well, probably because I am not a fan of resignation and, in most cases, this is what I hear echoed in this phrase. The spiritual emptiness confounds me.

What if we re-framed that reply? What if we actually thought about the posed question and what if, in that moment of thought, of contemplation, we could simply be content with our world and respond to that? Respond to our current reality – messiness and all? What if, instead of replying through auto pilot, we were actually, mindful? Yup, there's that word again, and it's not being used on a meditation cushion!

I offer this as a possibility because when we are mindful – moment to moment – we are able to see the holy in the unholiest of all moments. And doesn't that just rewire us?! We can view our place in the universe as a Divine creation that both gives and receives. We are able to slow down a bit, to give generously and to receive the grace that flows to us. We can set aside our pre-conceived notions and our expectations and receive the moments of unfolding contentment.

Perhaps that is the real gift of, “It is what it is.”

Grace, Always Yours,
Reverend Deborah

Ponder this: Can you commit to mindfulness in every moment of every day?
