Love one another as I have loved you.

— John 13:34

Greetings, Inspired Seekers:

“Love one another as I have loved you.” This, in my opinion, is perhaps the most demanding and powerful quotation from the Christian scriptures. It is written in John 13:34. But, what will it take for us to write it in on our hearts and live it each day? Much more than a Bible Study Class, I'm sure.

What if this commandment was the foundation of all discernment at the individual, community, national and global levels? What if this were not simply a frequently read passage but, instead, were words firmly imprinted on our souls as the tattoos are on our bodies?

If we sit on our cushions or in our pews, if we kneel in our mosques or walk silently in our forests with these words as our only meditation, how might we change? For we cannot change the ways of this world, we cannot stem the tide of suffering and violence, and we cannot really and deeply celebrate each other's joys if we do not steep these words, like a soothing tea, within the waters of our True Selves.

It seems to me that the deep prayer of these words forces us to awaken to our individual value systems, our own, personal core values and beliefs that we claim to live by. So, what are these qualities and beliefs that we will commit to and act in alignment with when other choices are being proposed? Will we have the spiritual courage to do so?

This month, as the blossoms spread their beauty, the earth reawakens and the air is breathing with a lightness and clarity of renewal, may our hearts and minds re-emerge as instruments for the highest good of all.

May our values be openly witnessed, without need for clarification, in the midst of division, and may our hearts be both softened and strengthened by the grace of goodness.

Let us listen to the longings of the world and respond with grace and grit.

Grace, Always Yours,
Reverend Deborah

Question of the Month: Will your actions speak louder than your words and will others see your love of Spirit?
