GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#131 — March 1, 2023

A life without love is like a year without spring.

— Octavian Paler

Greetings, Inspired Seekers:

Welcome Spring! While this has been a winter of wide, roller-coaster weather rides, spring in the Northern Hemisphere is arriving. The only question is how she will make her entrance. Slowly, with graceful, gentle balletic glides, or as an effervescent burst of energy, commanding center stage with full lights and an orchestra?

As the month unfolds, so will the epic adventure of the new season. And, how will we, as its cast members, respond? The Native Americans and the Celts were grounded in the forces of nature and took their cues from her. Many of today's Christian practices, rituals and liturgies are reflective of these ancient practices, and through them all common ground is created and shared. While parcels of that common ground are central in many of the world's traditions, some form the edges of sacred spiritual communities that don't fit into the norm – the outliers. The fringe.

Regardless of the spiritual path we walk, Spring, in all her splendor, represents creation in its most glorious form. Rains that cleanse and nurture the earth wash away the debris of the past. Old growth is swept away for new blossoms to thrive in the sometimes wicked winds. The darkness of days gives way to the light of new dawns and extended hours of brightness as spotlights rise from the shadows. We are surrounded by her growth and cloaked in the new costumes of the next act. We adapt and learn new lines. Roots, after a deep rest, produce shoots of beauty and abundance and we, hopefully, follow their lead.

In all of this exuberant time of renewal and resurgence, who is our true Director? Are we growing, like nature, or remaining stagnant?

This spring, may we find firm footing on the common ground of creation: open hearts, new shoots, and helping hands that are all engaged by our Spiritual Choreographer. Let us move with kindness, enjoying the benefits of reflective silence. After the dark quiet of winter, may there be a new internal Light of Wisdom that guides us all. May the curtain rise on a new day!

Grace, Always Yours,
Reverend Deborah
