GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

If I know what love is, it is because of you.

— Hermann Hesse

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

Welcome to wedding season! Finally! My email is filling with inquiries from couples who are finally planning – or re-planning – their nuptials. And so, I have been thinking about love in all of its vast forms. After all, the pandemic didn't curtail love, it only required us to reschedule ceremonies and, perhaps, asked us to see it with new eyes in a deeper and richer way.

Love, I believe, is our foundation. It is taught, offered and preached about by every faith path and religion. It is our most powerful, transformative and necessary lesson that is present in every stage of life. It is the source of our choices and decisions. All of them.

In my ministry, whether speaking, coaching or celebrating, I have discovered that I do not have to unveil the new so much as I hope to uncover that which was planted in each of us, from our beginning, by a loving God. And, in that uncovering, we discover that which we have allowed to block the love force within us – those distractions that prevent trust, openness and truth from coming forth.

For love is not what we do. Love is who we are. It is who we are when we live our deep and honest Truth with dignity and honor. And in today's world, that is as challenging as some of the vows we promise to keep. The anger, resentment and frustration we witness in the world are impediments to our connection with Spirit. And that Spirit is Love. When we are thusly disconnected our relationships suffer.

Love overcomes the illusion of separation, of “the other.” Love is about union and, as much as it delights my soul to officiate weddings, love flows beyond that soulful ceremony. Love is the richness and the honor of the vows uttered and the promises made and manifested in our lives.

While romantic love is joyful and exciting, the real question is: Can I love them through IT, whatever IT is? If we would really ask that question, not just of our Beloved, but with all who cross our paths as they struggle, what a different world it would be. Then, every moment of every day might feel like a wedding!

Grace, Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
