QUIT — is not a 4-letter word!

— Reverend Dr. Deborah Darlington

Greetings, Fellow Seekers:

It seems to me that the approach of Spring is a perfect time to recognize that QUIT is not necessarily a 4-letter word. After all, aren’t we facing “Spring cleaning season?” And that might just be the time to QUIT that which is no longer useful or healthy.

Throughout all faith traditions, people seeking enlightenment, God or that SpaceForGrace have given up what they knew, walked away from trappings of all forms that did not serve them, and ventured into the unknown, in faith. It’s time for us to join the journey.

I have “QUIT” several careers — not because I didn’t enjoy them — but because I found myself called in a different direction. I have “Quit” toxic relationships that were killing my spirit, and I have “Quit” belief systems that were exclusive and lacked compassion. None of these leavings were easy. We are programmed to think of QUITTING as failure. Sometimes, we fail if we don’t quit. Sometimes, it is the voice of Grace that is telling us we are on the wrong path. So, how do we discern our soul’s call. Well, here are some ideas — here’s the “stop doing” list:

QUIT ignoring the signs that are given. Pay attention.
QUIT ignoring the call of Grace within you. Pay attention.
QUIT ignoring the gifts you were given. Pay attention.

And here’s the “to do” list:

Clarify the clutter: What is distracting you in body, mind and spirit?
Categorize the cast-offs: What can be changed now? What needs time?
Coordinate your calendar: When are you committing to begin?
Cast off ceaselessly: Are you really letting it go?
Cultivate commitment: Are you engaging in behaviors that will prevent repeating the past?

Yes, we are responsible for allowing the behaviors and voices of others to create detours in our words, thoughts and choices. There is a good reason that meditation, contemplative prayer and spiritual retreats are a part of all faith paths. Sometimes, we just need to cast out the clutter and QUIT!
