GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#105 — January 1, 2021

So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.

— Bahá’u'lláh

Greetings, Inspired Seekers!

How do we greet the new year, let go of the past without erasing its lessons and live in a better way, firmly planted in the present? Nothing like starting 2021 with an easy question!

Perhaps we begin by connecting the dots. The dots that seem scattered in the same way that so many dreams of the previous year found their way in the wind. Maybe we begin by connecting all that is good, beneficial, wondrous and true. Maybe that is the starting point of our upcoming journey into the continued unknown.

And what if, instead of connecting the dots of our small, ego-centered selves, we looked for the universal truths, the sacred stories and life symbols that connect us all? For if there is anything that the previous year leaves waving at us, it is the knowledge that our global family is, in fact, global – pandemic notwithstanding.

While I do not engage in “resolutions,” I do dig deeply into intentions with prayerful hope. Faith centers me in the citizenship of the world where our differences do not disrupt our unity and diversity does not create “the other.” Nature illustrates that all species of trees create the beauty of the forest and each individual snowflake creates the splendor of the snow scape; it is unity that holds all, each supporting the whole.

Perhaps 2021 will be the year when we see our differences as the boundless possibilities given to us by the Creator. Perhaps, instead of putting up walls, we will see our world with limitless gifts ready to be opened. Even as buildings remain closed, may our hearts, minds and souls be fully open, welcoming the new, respectful of creative opportunities, however “foreign” they initially seem.

Perhaps when we really connect the dots, the sacred pathway will open up and 2021 will be a year like no other. Just like the last – but in a really good and holy way. Happy New Year. Blessings to you and all those you have yet to meet!

Grace, Fully Yours,
Reverend Deborah
