GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#7 — November 1, 2012

It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full.
Be thankful that you have a glass and that there’s something in it!

Welcome, Inspired Seeker!

I love Thanksgiving! It is one of my favorite holidays because the world focuses on giving thanks. But so often, we have conditions on what we are thankful for. And those conditions contain big BUT’s. I am thankful for my job BUT I need more money. I am thankful for my children BUT I wish they did better in school. I am thankful for my house BUT I wish I had more space. The list goes on.

Thessalonians reminds us: In everything, give thanks.
From the Vedanta: Whatever I am offered in devotion with a pure heart … I accept with joy.
The Buddha said: Let us rise up and be thankful.

All of these traditions were clear and simple: give thanks, no strings attached. For today — give thanks that you have a job, as many do not. When you look into the eyes of your child, give thanks, for there are many that cannot. When you sit in your living space, give thanks, for there are many who have no space that is their own.

Finding the thankfulness takes courage, love and faith. The world does a fine job at pointing out the negative. I urge you to find the positive. No BUT’s about it!
