GraceNotes: Holding the Space for … Reflection

#5 — September 1, 2012

The day will come when, after harnessing
the ether, the winds, the tides and the gravitation,
we shall harness for God the energies of love.
And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world,
man will have discovered fire.

— Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Welcome, Inspired Seeker!

Love is a word that we bandy about; sometimes it flows easily off our tongues and sometimes, even when we know it is the word that wants to be heard, it chokes back into the silence and remains unuttered.

How do you love? Like Christ? “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” A pretty tall order! One that definitely will ignite a flame.

Buddhism teaches that there are four aspects of real love: loving-kindness, compassion, joy and freedom. These elements, when combined, equal true love. And we can find these threads and lessons in all of the major faith traditions. The question is never “Which tradition is right?” The question is, rather, “Am I loving fully and completely?” Am I allowing love to blaze into the world?

Am I offering loving-kindness to others; am I intentionally bringing them goodness with my words and actions? Am I compassionately present, easing the hurt of others and authentically supporting them? Does my presence add joy to the experience — really? And, am I offering love with freedom and without restraint, both for myself and for the other?

Love — in its complete and pure form, is not easy. It requires deep listening and even deeper understanding. It requires time and patience and an openness. It requires that we love first. Christ never said love me and then I will love you! There were no conditions.

In a world that lives with give and take, let us live with the give. Not in a way that diminishes us as spiritual beings but in a way that opens the Light within us and streams it into the world!
